Stadiums set to collide

The country's top Muay Thai fighters will box at Lumpini stadium on Friday.

For the first time ever, the top two competing stadiums will cooperate to produce a fight card.

The 10-bout card has been jointly organised by Lumpini and Ratchadamnoen stadiums in an attempt to revive the martial art's plunging popularity and help boost the sport hit by the economic downturn.

Normally, the boxers do not fight at each other's stadiums.

Friday's event is led by Sanchai Sor Kingstar, who is considered the best pound-per-pound Muay Thai fighter at the moment. He will take on two opponents in the 130-pound division.

Pethbunchu F.A. Group and Saketdao Petphayathai will take turns to fight Sanchai during a five-round bout.

Ratchadamnoen promoter Songchai Rattanasuban said organisers wanted to join hands to solve the problems in Muay Thai.

The revenue and number of fans at both stadiums has decreased significantly over the past few years due to lacklustre fights as well as economic and political problems.

"This will show our unity to fight the crisis," he said.

"In my 33 years as promoter, this is the biggest event. Thai and foreign fans will surely see exciting fights."

The organisers have invested about 2.5 million to stage the event with 1.7 million baht being spent on fighters' fees.

Lumpini promoter Piyarat Wachirarattanawongse said proceeds from the event would go to people hit by violence in the South.

"We hope this will be the beginning of fans returning to the stadiums," he said.

The return leg will take palce at Ratchadamnoen stadium on August 6.

Lumpinee is run by the military... What more do you expect? Not the brightest blokes.

"economic downturn" is code for "canary in the tourist abuse coal mine"

Pay 5 to 10 times what a local pays to be leered at and treated like you don't belong? What a bargain!

As long as they have dual pricing, I will not be going. 1500 baht and I pay taxes? What a joke. I hope they go bust!

I will not be going as long as they have dual pricing. 1500 baht and I live here paying taxes? What a joke and I hope they go bust.

The dual-pricing that occurs in this place is an absolute joke - avoid at all costs.

Why spend 1,500 baht (compared to 200 baht for the Thais) watching two unheard of Thai boxers in a run down stadium, when you can spend 35 GBP watching a main event like Ricky Hatton at the Manchester Evening arena...?

The people running this place need to get a clue.

The first and only time I went to watch Muay Thai was with friends who practice the sport. We were so hyped to get into Lumpinee stadium, and were totally deflated by the ridiculous prices they charge foreigners to watch. Totally unjustifiable pricing policy. Also, foreigners are forced to take ring-side seats, or sit in a special section, when we really want to be stuck in the crowd watching the intense gambling and to be amongst the atmosphere. Another example of Thailand assuming what we want, and outpricing the majority of people who would be interested to go watch. Do some real market research people! And stop the racist pricing systems or people will stop coming here. Tourist numbers are already falling. Get them back!

Do they still charge inflated prices for foreigners? I know a lot of people who won't go to watch the Muay Thai because of the pricing policy.
