Serbia avenged their loss in last year's European Championship final to upset Spain 92-89 in an opening quarter-final thriller at the world basketball championships on Wednesday.

Serbia led the reigning world champions by as much as 10 points late in the first quarter as Nemanja Bjelica and Novica Velickovic collected 10 and 11 points respectively, an advantage that was gradually cut to four points (27-23) by the end of the quarter.
