Sharapova hits ground running at Paris Open

Beaten Australian Open finalist Maria Sharapova made a winning start at the WTA Paris Open on Wednesday, beating South Africa's Chanelle Scheepers 6-3, 6-1 to reach the last 16.

Russia's Maria Sharapova returns to South Africa's Chanelle Scheepers during their Paris' WTA tournament tennis match at Pierre de Coubertin stadium in Paris. Sharapova made a winning start at the WTA Paris Open on Wednesday, beating Scheepers 6-3, 6-1 to reach the last 16.

Given a first-round bye due to her top seeding, the Russian world number three was competing in her first ever match at the indoor tournament at the Pierre de Coubertin arena in Paris' chic 16th arrondissement.
