Buakaw victorious

Muay Thai superstar Buakaw Por Pramuk stopped Rustem Zaripov of Russia in the second round at the Thai Fight event in Pattaya yesterday.

Buakaw Por Pramuk, right, stopped Rustem Zaripov in the second round yesterday.

Buakaw made a late entrance to the exhibition due to a conflict with his former camp but the Russian posed him few problems.

"I decide to fight even though I might be jailed tomorrow,'' said the fighter, in tears, who left his former camp last month.

"I won this fight for the fans and especially those from my  native province Surin.''

The Thai was scheduled to fight Mickael Cornubet of France in the 70kg but he was replaced by the disappointing Zaripov.

Buakaw's appearance in the three-round event surprised the fans at the makeshift stadium in Pattaya because, with one day to go before the fight, there had still been no confirmation that he would compete.

But Buakaw shrugged off those concerns and was delighted to take part.

"I knew from the beginning of the year that I had to fight here,'' he added.

"So I made it.''

Earlier, his former camp Por Pramuk had threatened to sue the 29-year-old boxer if he used the name of their camp in the fight so Buakaw could now face a lawsuit after ignoring that request.

In the 67kg category, Singmanee Kaewsamrith beat Sudsakorn Sor Klinmee on points.

The victory means Singmanee will represent the Thai team in the eight-boxer Thai Fight starting in October.
