Chonlatarn to face John

Unbeaten Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo will fight champion Chris John of Indonesia for the WBA featherweight title in Singapore in September, the Thai's handlers said yesterday.

Chonlatarn's manager Pariyakorn Rattanasuban said a contract had been signed and the bout will take place at the Marina Bay Sands on Sep 28.

"Chonlatarn is ready for the fight," she said.

It will be highly-rated Chonlatarn's first title shot. He is currently a WBC Asian Boxing Council champion and also the WBO Asia Pacific Featherweight title-holder.

The 27-year-old has won all his 44 fights with 27 knockouts.

The 32-year-old Indonesian is also unbeaten with 47 wins (22KOs) and two draws. Having won the 126-pound crown in 2003, he successfully defended the title for the 15th time last month when he took a unanimous points victory over Shoji Kimura of Japan.

In another development, WBC light-flyweight champion Kompayak Por Pramuk will face Adrian Hernandez in his second title defence.

Kompayak (40-3-0, 30KOs) stopped the Mexican in the 10th round to win the belt in Bangkok in December.

"We have to fight the Mexican again because they hold an option," said Kompayak's manager Piyarat Wachirarattanawongse.

It has not yet been determined where the fight will take place although Piyarat plans to stage the bout in Thailand on Aug 12.

Meanwhile, former champions Pongsaklek Wonjongkam and Oledong Sithsamerchai will have to prove who deserves to challenge WBC flyweight champion Sonny Boy Jaro of the Philippines.

Jaro won the title with a stunning knockout victory over Pongsaklek in February.

Piyarat said both Pongsaklek and former WBC strawweight champion Oledong will each have two more fights to decide who will get the chance to face Jaro.
