Mondory had been suffering from a right knee injury and despite efforts to be ready for the three-week race had to pull out late on Thursday.

The 38-year-old Hinault, who is no relation to former five-time champion Bernard Hinault, first competed in the Tour de France in 1999.

His only victory so far in a Grand Tour is a stage win on the Tour of Spain in 2008.

The 99th edition of the Tour begins with a 6.4 km prologue in Liege on Saturday.
