'The greatest show on Earth'

LONDON: Queen Elizabeth II opened the London Olympics early Saturday as Britain celebrated its rich culture and heritage in a spectacular ceremony.

Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn grants an audience to the Thai Olympic contingent on Thursday.

A packed stadium featuring countless dignitaries and a TV audience estimated at one billion saw seven young British athletes light the Olympic cauldron, consisting of 204 copper stems, after the monarch was brought to the stadium by "James Bond" Daniel Craig in a short film.

Makes you proud to be British. The show, the story, the comedy, the music, the fireworks. It simply was an amazing opening ceremony in the BEST city in the World!!!

I could only watch a few minutes of the beginning part : far too much cheesy multicultural rubbish for me.

I didn't realise Victorian England had so many coloured gentlemen !!.

I did enjoy watching the atheletes walk out though : you could see how thrilled they were to be part of it.

I did laugh earlier in the day when I was reading a Jeremy Clarkson book about how pointless a lot of the sports are. He described the hammer-throwing as "The best in the world out of those who have spent the last 4 years intensively training for it".

    I agree with D1 & D3

Not being English one could understand them not being able to follow and grasp the concept of the show.

I thought it was brilliant and brought back a lot of memories.

With exception of the scene of the queen with 007 ,a comic interlude with "Mr.Bean" and the flame ceremony {together about 5 minutes} this was a very poor show in comparison to f.e. Barcelona. That even a nitwit like Beckham played a role is beyond me.
