Reigning World Series champion St. Louis, one strike from defeat, scored four runs in the ninth inning to stun Washington 9-7 on Friday and advance in the Major League Baseball playoffs.

The Cardinals will face the San Francisco Giants in the best-of-seven National League Championship Series that begins Sunday. The winner of that series will face either Detroit or the New York Yankees in the World Series.
