Singha to host two amateur events

The Thailand Golf Association (TGA) will host the 78th Singha Thailand Amateur Open this week and the 5th Singha Thailand Junior World Golf Championships 2012 next month.

TGA president Rangsrid Luxitanond said that 15 countries including South Korea, Singapore, Denmark and the Philippines will take part in the Singha Thailand Amateur Open at Panya Golf Club in Bangkok from Oct 16-19.

Launched in 1930, the Thailand Amateur Open is the oldest amateur golf event in the country.

"It will be very competitive because of a strong field," he said. "Our players are quite young but they are ready."

The host team will be led by Somprat Rattanasuwan, Chanachok Dejbhirattanamongkhol, Kamolwan Luemsri and Supamas Saengjan.

The competition is a 72-hole strokeplay event.

The men's champion will receive the King Rama VII trophy while the women's winner will get the TGA president trophy.

Among the previous winners are some of the country's best professionals including Boonchu Ruangkit, Thongchai Jaidee, Thaworn Wiratchant and Prayad Marksaeng.

The Singha Thailand Junior World Golf Championships will be held at Royal Hua Hin Golf Club from Nov 8-11 with participants from 18 countries.

"Apart from competing for honours, we hope the tournament will be a stage for culture exchanges," Rangsrid said.

There will be four age groups for both boys and girls _ Class A (15-17), Class B (13-14), Class C (11-12) and Class D (9-10).

Class A and B will be played with a 72-hole strokeplay format while Class C and D will be played over 54 holes.
