AHMEDABAD : England captain Alastair Cook gave his side a glimmer of hope in their attempt to avoid defeat in the first Test against India, batting through the entire fourth day after again being let down by his top-order colleagues.

In England's second innings, Cook remained unbeaten on 168 at stumps, alongside keeper-batsman Matt Prior, who was 84 not. Their 141-run partnership steered England to 340-5, 10 runs in front of India's first-innings score after being forced to follow-on.
