More US chances for Thai fighters

Promoter Garry Shaw has promised more chances for Thai boxers to fight in the United States this year, Thai officials said yesterday.

WBC vice president Kovid Bhakdibhumi said the American promoter told him during his visit to Thailand this week that he wanted to see more Asians fight in the US.

"Thailand is one of the boxing powerhouses in Asia and cannot be overlooked," Kovid quoted Shaw as saying.

"This is a good sign that a leading promoter is interested in Thai boxers. We will try to send more young Thai fighters to the US."

Shaw is regarded as one of the world's top three boxing promoters behind Bob Arum and Oscar De La Hoya.

The first chance will go to super-featherweight Jomthong Singwangcha, 23, who is the OPBF champion and ranked 13th by the WBC.

His manager Narit Singwangcha said that it would be great for Thais to get more opportunities to fight in America.

"It is my dream to see more Thais fight in America," he said.

"I hope Jomthong will impress the crowd as this will help pave the way for other Thai boxers to go there."

According to Narit, Jomthong will fight on March 31 in Las Vegas against an opponent yet to be named.
