Kings ring in short NHL season with banner ceremony

The Los Angeles Kings finally got to unfurl their first championship banner in a colourful ceremony after a labour dispute led to a three-month delay to the start of the NHL season.

The Los Angeles Kings' 2001-12 Stanley Cup banner is raised during a ceremony before the NHL season opening game against the Chicago Blackhawks at Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, on January 19, 2013. Chicago won 5-2.

The lockout-shortened season, originally set to begin in October, got underway on Saturday with the Kings' dropping a 5-2 afternoon game to the 2010 Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks on a day when 26 of the league's 30 teams were in action.
