Srisaket to fight Sato in April

Srisaket Sor Rungvisai is scheduled to challenge WBC super-flyweight Yota Sato in his hometown of Si Sa Ket on April 30.

The fight, to be held according to the option after Suriyan Sor Rungvisai lost to Sato last March, was confirmed by promoter Surachart Pisitwutthinan who met with Sato's manager Keiichiro Kamehira in Bangkok last week.

"I can confirm that the fight will be in Si Sa Ket on April 30," Surachart said. "Based on the option, I have a right to choose the date, the venue and the opponent. So, I will follow that."

The move came after the champion's side has tried to get the Thai boxer to fight in Japan.

"They were trying to buy the option and bring Srisaket to fight in Japan," he said. "But their attempt was unsuccessful."

However, Surachart said that he agreed to the request from the champion's camp in terms of the accommodation, plane tickets and the venue.

"I will provide them with a five-star hotel, five plane tickets and the indoor venue."

Suriyan was toppled by Sato in Japan last year. Instead of getting Suriyan to regain his belt, the promoter preferred Srisaket who, he thought, was more powerful but less experienced.

"I am really confident he will stop Sato," said Surachart.

"To be a great champion, you must have a powerful punch. Srisaket is my choice."

In his warm-up fight on Monday, the 26-year-old Srisaket stopped his opponent in the first round to register his 16th knockout in his 17 wins against one draw and one loss.

The 28-year-old Sato (26-2-1,12KOs) beat compatriot Ryo Akaho with a unanimous point victory last month. It was his second successful title defence after beating Suriyan.
