Schaefer lashes out over preparation for Kuwait

Thailand coach Winfried Schaefer yesterday criticised the national team's preparation for Wednesday's Asian Cup qualifier against Kuwait.

Attending a press conference after the team lost 1-0 to Ratchaburi Mitrpol FC in a warm-up match on Saturday, Schaefer claimed his team had not been given enough time together, pointing to the cancellation of a practice match against the United Arab Emirates.

"We've had some problems in the preparation for this important match," Schaefer said.

"It started with missing the game with UAE, where the venue was changed and then, at the last minute, we had problems organising visas.

"The FAT [Football Association of Thailand] also changed the schedule for the training camp."

Schaefer did not hide his frustration but also insisted he did not blame FAT president Worawi Makudi.

"This made me very much pissed off because it has affected the preparation of the team," Schaefer said.

"We have had some problems building up the fitness of the players.

"But I would like to say that it is not the fault of president Worawi Makudi at all."

Regardless of the interrupted preparation, Schaefer insisted there would be no excuses if his side does not perform against Kuwait.

"The focus is on the Asian Cup qualification match with Kuwait," Schaefer said. "We know it is a tough match but if we cannot win, I will be responsible, without any excuses."
