The curse of match-fixing rears its ugly head

Match-fixing is arguably the ugliest word in sport, up there with doping. The grim truth is that if match-fixing is involved, no matter what the sport, it simply isn't sport any more.

German referee Robert Hoyzer was jailed for two years for match-fixing.

So it is hardly surprising the report from Europol earlier this week - alleging fixing in football matches around the globe and pointing the finger at a Singapore-based ring - has created shockwaves.
