Nagoya deny Buriram as new season approaches

Japan's Nagoya Grampus Eight yesterday beat Thai League Cup champions Buriram United in the Toyota Premier Cup match at Supachalasai Stadium.

Nagoya Grampus Eight players celebrate winning the Toyota Premier Cup.

Nagoya became the first Japanese side to lift the trophy in the third edition of the annual match between Thailand's League Cup winners and their Japanese counterparts.

Buriram won the competition last year and Thai Port were the first winners in 2011.

Buriram defeated Brisbane Roar in midweek to reach the AFC Champions League group stages, so were obliged to rest some key players.

Nagoya were too strong for the Thunder Castle and Jungo Fujimoto opened the scoring after 30 minutes.

Carmelo Gonzalez had a couple of chances but could not send the ball past Nagoya goalkeeper Seigo Narazaki.

In the second half, Buriram coach Attapol Bussapakom sent on inspirational midfielder Suchao Nutnum, hoping he could lift his team.

Instead, Fujimoto finished off Buriram eight minutes from time.

"Nagoya were strong and we rarely caused trouble for them," Attapol said.

Buriram will meet Thai Premier League champions SCG Muang Thong United in the King's Trophy _ the curtain-raising match of the new season _ at Supachalasai on Saturday and the TPL season kicks off the following week.
