Thaworn leads Thai challenge

Asian Tour No.1 Thaworn Wiratchant will lead the Thai challenge at the season-opening Myanmar Open which tees off today.

A total of 29 Thais will be playing at the Royal Mingalardon Golf and Country Club in Yangon in the 154-player field.

The 46-year-old Thaworn, who has won a record 15 tour titles, is among the favourites. However, he got off to a bad start to the season missing the cut in a domestic event last week.

In the first two rounds at the Myanmar Open, he will play alongside two veterans, 56-year-old compatriot Boonchu Ruangkit and 46-year-old Singaporean Mardan Mamat.

''I've played on the Asian Tour for many years so I'm not feeling nervous ahead of the 2013 season,'' said the world No.78.

Other Thai hopefuls include Prayad Marksaeng, who won last week's Singha Esan Open in Khon Kaen, Kiradech Aphibarnrat, Prom Meesawat and Chapchai Nirat.

Kiradech finished second in Myanmar last year but is not expected to do well this year due to his poor health.

The 23-year-old, who is recovering from hyperthyroid, said he felt very tired after yesterday's pro-am round.

''I have a problem with my thyroid and this makes me feel tired so fast when I play golf,'' said Kiradech who won the Singha Masters in Chiang Rai last month.

Prom is regarded as a contender in the US$300,000 tournament.

The 29-year-old has been on a good run _ he was sixth on last year's Asian Tour Order of Merit and finished 16th at last month's Qatar Masters on the European Tour.

Other Thais in the field include Donlaphatchai Niyomchon, Annop Tangkamolprasert, Sattaya Supupramai and Rattanon Wannasrichan, who earned his tour card last month.

Other contenders include defending champion Kieran Pratt of Australia, two-time tour winner Rikard Karlberg of Sweden and 10-time Japan Golf Tour winner Yuta Ikeda.
