Sensational Chawalit takes Myanmar

YANGON - Chawalit Plaphol made desperation birdies on the 17th and 18th holes for a last-second win over surprising Sri Lankan Mithun Perera at the $300,000 Zaygabar Myanmar Open on Sunday.

Perera, 26, is the son of Nandasena Perera, a well-known name on the Asian circuit in the 1980s and '90s, came out of nowhere on the final day of the tournament, and held the lead for most of the last hour.

The Sri Lankan shot 65, the best round of the day, to vault over Thais who dominated the leaderboard for three and a half days.

But wily Chawalit birdied three of the last five holes to pip Perera on the very last shot of the tournament.

Kiradech Aphibarnrat, who led the first two rounds, continued to have putting problems. He finished third.
