A superb first-half brace from Messi put the Blaugrana 2-0 ahead on the night and levelled the tie 2-2 on aggregate, but in between Milan striker M'Baye Niang hit the post with a one-on-one which would have left Barca needing four goals to qualify.

The stage was set for a tie-winning Messi hat-trick, but instead it was David Villa who picked out the far corner in the 55th minute following a quite brilliant pass from Xavi.

And rampaging left-back Jordi Alba finished brilliant Barca's job with a close-range strike on the counter deep in injury time.

As expected, Barca attacked relentlessly from kick-off and it paid off with victory.

At Schalke, Umut Bulut struck a last-gasp winner as Galatasaray booked their place in the last eight with a 3-2 win.

The substitute striker raced clear deep into stoppage-time to end the German's hopes and clinch a 4-3 success on aggregate.

In what proved to be a rollercoaster tie, the hosts took the lead through Roman Neustadter's scrappy 17th minute opener.

However, the visitors took control with two goals in five minutes at the end of the first period.

Ex-Schalke midfielder Hamit Altintop drew Fatih Terim's men level with a sensational 35-yard drive before Yilmaz lobbed Timo Hildebrand to all-but kill the hosts' hopes.

Jens Keller's team pressed to find a way back into the tie following the break and despite a composed finish by Michel Bastos just past the hour, they couldn't find the goal to deny the Turkish outfit their first quarter-final appearance since 2001.

And Bulut came off the bench to wrap up victory with the last kick of the game.
