Reading bid farewell to the big, bald bloke with glasses

In this column exactly a month ago, I was bemoaning the fact that Brian McDermott, boss of my hometown team Reading, had just been named the Premiership's Manager of the Month. It is football folklore that managers who win that award invariably go on to wish they hadn't.
From that moment, the gaffer known affectionately as the 'big, bald bloke with glasses' was doomed, and so most likely were Reading.
