Lack of depth will hurt Tottenham against City

Spurs have only won one of their last five games in all competitions, and are struggling for form at the moment ahead of their clash with Manchester City in the Premier League tomorrow.

The main problem with Spurs is they do not have sufficient strength in depth.

Their exploits in Europe have taken a lot out of their threadbare squad and the effects have been obvious in the lethargic way they have played the past few games.

They have struggled to perform like they did earlier in the season and the unfortunate injury to star player Gareth Bale has come at a most inconvenient time.

But even if the Welsh winger is available for Spurs, City will still pick up all three points against Andre Villas-Boas's men. With Manchester United virtually assured of the Premier League title, City, unlike Spurs, head into this clash under no pressure at all, and this will work in their favour.

Theirs is a squad chock-full of quality players and can count on the likes of Sergio Aguero, Yaya Toure or even James Milner to bail them out when the going gets tough. Spurs, on the other hand, are over-reliant on Bale, and with players like Emmanuel Adebayor failing to perform on a consistent basis, it is no surprise they have been tepid in recent games.

But do not count the north Londoners out of the race to finish in the top four just yet. Even if they lose to City, they still have five more games to play and absolutely anything can happen.

Another massive game this weekend sees Liverpool take on Chelsea.

Of course, the magnitude of this clash between these two top teams has increased given how it will mark the return of Rafael Benitez to Anfield.

The Spaniard is far from being the most well-liked figure among the Stamford Bridge faithful but he is still revered by numerous Liverpool fans as one of the club's best ever coaches and will receive a warm response from the Kop.

However, Benitez must find a way to reinvigorate the Blues if they are to come away with anything against Brendan Rodgers' men. They were simply terrible in the first-half of their FA Cup semi-final with City and looked like a team devoid of ideas.

It is no excuse that Chelsea are suffering from fatigue. Yes, they played in the Europa League on the Thursday before last Sunday's semi-final but they made seven changes to their team and should not have performed as lethargically as they did.

Liverpool may have failed to find the target in their last game once again but that was largely because of Reading goalkeeper Alex McCarthy's outstanding display.

They should banish their goal-scoring woes against Chelsea, with Luis Suarez surely eager to prove he is better than the player he was bought to replace, Fernando Torres.

Torres has been an enigmatic figure at Chelsea but he is finally finding some semblance of form and could very well burst into life against his former employers.

Nonetheless, playing at home could prove decisive for Liverpool in a game that will be as intriguing as it will be exciting.
