Thai clubs can depend on support from insurance giant

AIA Thailand has officially announced its support for 34 domestic football clubs, pledging 380 million baht.

AIA Thailand CEO Ron van Oijen, right, with Thailand coach Winfried Schaefer.

After being successful in its contributions to sports over the past two years, the insurance company says it is now sponsoring 34 teams in the Toyota Thai Premier League, Yamaha League One and AIS League.

It initially supported 25 teams and the number increased to 30 teams last year.

"Our support for the 34 teams includes cash and personal accident insurance policies worth 380 million baht," said Ron van Oijen, CEO of AIA Thailand.

He said the company continued and expanded its support for local clubs because it wants to help push for development in Thai football.

The sponsorship is also part of the company's business strategy.

"We want to see football development," he said. "The sponsorship also helps make Thai football fans know more about AIA."

Earlier this year, the company brought PSV Eindhoven to play TPL champions SCG Muang Thong United in a friendly match in Bangkok.

The Dutch club also conducted several football clinics and workshops for players and coaches.

"We are considering bringing another leading club to Thailand this year," Van Oijen said.
