Thailand's Worawi Makudi lost in the first round of voting as the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) elected Bahrain's Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa its new president Thursday, replacing disgraced ex-leader Mohamed bin Hammam.

Sheikh Salman beat UAE rival Yousef Al Serkal and Mr Worawi in the first round of voting when he gathered 33 of the 46 ballots to amass the necessary two-thirds majority.
