Ratchanok rises to fifth in rankings

Teenage badminton star Ratchanok Intanon moved up to fifth in the world rankings published on Thursday.

The 18-year-old Thai climbed up from sixth following her victory at the India Open on Sunday.

With the position, she is the youngest player to have reached the top five in the world.

Ratchanok is taking a three-week break before competing in the Sudirman Cup in Kuala Lumpur from May 19-26 and the SCG Thailand Open from June 4-9.

The top-four women remain unchanged with Li Xeurui of China keeping the No.1 spot. She is followed by Saina Nehwal of India, Wang Yihan of China and German's Juliane Schenk who was beaten by Ratchanok at in the India Open final.

Porntip Buranaprasertsuk is 12th and Busanan Ongbumrungpan 19th.

Ratchanok has won several titles but the India triumph was her first in a Superseries event.

Following the breakthrough win, she said she wanted to be in the top three in the world at the end of the season with winning an Olympic gold medal her ultimate goal.

Meanwhile, in the men's rankings, Boonsak Ponsana, who lost to world No.1 Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia in the semi-finals in India, moved up three places from 11th to eighth.
