Bangkok will host four friendlies against visiting powerhouse clubs

It will be like a football festival in Thailand from July 13-Aug 7 when the country welcomes four of the world's leading clubs to play friendly matches in Bangkok.

English Premier League champions Manchester United will open the spell on July 13, followed by fellow EPL teams Chelsea (July 17) and Liverpool (July 28) and Spanish champions Barcelona (Aug 7). The quartet will take on an All-Star team or the Thai national side at Rajamangala National Stadium.

The four clubs have promised to come with all their big-name players _ provided that they are healthy or going nowhere _ such as United's Robin van Persie, Chelsea's Fernando Torres, Liverpool's Luis Suarez and Barcelona's Lionel Messi.

The organisers of the Barcelona match said the club's new superstar, Neymar, will be on the trip to Bangkok although he will have to play for Brazil in this month's Confederations Cup.

United and Europa League champions Chelsea will be here as part of the 80th anniversary celebrations for Singha Corporation, a global partner of both clubs.

It will be both United's and Barcelona's first visit to Thailand for over a decade.

Chelsea and Liverpool have frequently visited Thailand in recent years and it will be the Reds' fourth trip to the Kingdom.

Jaturon Himathongkam, Singha Corporation's marketing director for international sports, said he is happy that both United and Chelsea will be in the country at roughly the same time.

"They have promised to bring the Premier League and Europa League trophies to Thailand," he said.

"They have also promised to come with all their stars except for those who are injured."

Both teams will be under new managers when they arrive. David Moyes will lead United while Jose Mourinho is expected to return to Stamford Bridge.

AP Honda is a sponsor of both United and Liverpool and the motorcycle company helped bring Liverpool to Thailand.

According to Jutamart Inpringananta, AP Honda manager for marketing communication, the company first signed a sponsorship deal with Liverpool three years ago and then planned to bring them to Thailand.

"It was our marketing campaign initiated three years ago," she said.

"We want to make Thai fans happy and we are also happy to help bring them to Thailand. I believe the stadium will be fully packed.

"We are organising activities for both fans and our dealers."

The match is officially called the 'Liverpool FC Tour 2013 Thailand presented by Standard Chartered _ Bangkok'.

AP Honda is also one of the sponsors of Barcelona's match.

The major player in bringing Barca here is Thai Beverage Marketing, producer of Chang beer, which is a sponsor of the Spanish giants.

Dubbed the 'Chang Champions Cup _ FC Barcelona Asian Tour 2013', the match will be held on Aug 7. Those who buy the most expensive tickets at 4500 baht each will also be able to watch them train ahead of the match.

"Thai fans have seen a lot of English Premier League clubs play here," said Sorakit Lathitham, ThaiBev marketing manager.

"Now they will see the best team in the world from Spain. It could be a once-in-a-life-time opportunity to see such a great team."

Barcelona boast two of the biggest stars in football _ Messi and Neymar.

While it is understandable that those involved in bringing the quartet to Thailand will gain from their trips in terms of business, a renowned coach believes fans will not get much on the footballing side.

"All these clubs will be here for marketing reasons and not for footballing purposes," said Witthaya Laohakul, coach of Thai Premier League side Chonburi.

"Do not expect to see truly competitive football matches. These clubs come here because of their sponsors and to please their fans."

But the outspoken coach welcomes all the teams because they have large fan bases here.

The All-Star players to face United and Chelsea will be picked by former national team striker Piyapong Pue-on, while SEA Games coach Kiatisak Senamuang will be in charge of the national team against Liverpool and Barcelona.

Witthaya said the matches could have been more exciting had fans been allowed to select the players.

"I don't see how the SEA Games or national team players will benefit from playing against these visiting teams. So it might be better to allow fans to get involved," he said.
