Kasiti announces candidacy for top FAT job

Kasiti Kamalanavin has joined the Football Association of Thailand (FAT) presidential race.

Kasiti, a former news anchorman at Channel 5, will run against acting FAT president Worawi Makudi, former national team manager Virach Charnpanich and football fan Pinit Ngarmpring in the upcoming election.

Kasiti, a vocal critic of Worawi, wanted to stand in the previous election in 2011 but failed to get nominated.

To contest the election, a candidate must be endorsed by a certain number of eligible voters.

"I have been reporting Thai football for 40 years and I am not afraid of losing," he said.

"I want to see Thai football reach international standards."

Worawi's term expired on June 16 but no election date has been set due to disagreement over the number of voters.

Worawi, who is also a Fifa executive member, insists the FAT must first approve its revised regulations to comply with Fifa statutes.

The number of voters would be 72, down from about 180, as recommended by Fifa, which says the FAT election should take place by Sept 30.

Worawi's opponents say the FAT should organise the election first and allow the new president to push for changes to its regulations to be in line with Fifa statutes. Fifa officials have come to Thailand twice to explain the governing body's statutes and why there should be 72 voters in the FAT election.

But his opponents are still not happy with the reduction in numbers and Worawi plans to arrange another meeting for Fifa officials to explain why it has to be 72.
