Hamilton's hopes of his second win in the British Grand Prix looked to have been fatally damaged as his left rear tyre deflated in spectacular fashion.

The 28-year-old - world champion in 2008 with McLaren - was leading after starting from pole position when his tyre came apart eight laps into the 52 lap race.

Hamilton, yet to win a race for his Mercedes team on his debut season for them, managed to make it back to the pits but re-emerged in last place.
