Worawi stands firm on election issue

Worawi Makudi, acting president of the Football Association of Thailand, on Wednesday told the Sports Authority of Thailand that the FAT must act according to Fifa statutes.

Worawi, his secretary-general Ong-arj Kosinkha and lawyer Veera Kunmee met SAT deputy governor Montri Chaiyaphan to offer their explanation and evidence on why the FAT had not organised an election for its president by July 16.

Worawi's term ended on June 16 and under the FAT regulations an election for its president must be held within 30 days of the incumbent's term expiring.

After yesterday's meeting, Worawi told reporters that he told Montri that the FAT had acted in accordance with a guideline from Fifa which demands that the FAT adopt its revised electoral code before the FAT presidential election can be held.

Worawi has scheduled Aug 9 for its members to vote on the revised regulations and the election on Sept 23.

His opponents want an earlier election date. They say the FAT should first organise the election and allow the new administration to push for changes to its charter to be in line with Fifa statutes.

The main controversial point is the number of eligible voters in the election. While Worawi insists it must be 72 as recommended by Fifa, his opponents want it to remain at about 180.

"We are a member of Fifa so we have to act according to Fifa regulations," Worawi, who is also a Fifa executive member, said yesterday.

"I can't do anything. It's our duty to act according to Fifa regulations."

Worawi has repeatedly said if the FAT fails to act in line with Fifa statutes, it could face suspension by the world governing body.

Fifa on Monday lifted its suspension of Cameroon's football association after just 17 days, saying the organisation had addressed its concerns over government interference.

A reporter asked Worawi about the issue and he said: "It is different from Thailand's case. Don't think that Thailand would face such a short suspension."

Montri admitted that any decision by the SAT would upset the other party and said the matter may end in a court of law.

Worawi will be challenged by former national team manager Virach Charnpanich which is backed by Thai Premier League powerhouses Chonburi FC and Buriram United.
