Thai trio will get visas to compete

The French Embassy in Bangkok has promised to issue visas for Thai golfers Pornanong Phatlum, Thidapa Suwannapura and Moriya Jutanugarn to compete at the Evian Championship, their handlers said yesterday.

The trio were initially denied visas to France to take part in the US$3.25 million major tournament to be held from Sept 12-15.

However, the embassy yesterday asked them to resubmit their applications.

"They ask us to resubmit applications and get visas in the US," one of their handlers said.

"They can get their visas after finishing the Safeway Classic in Portland on Sept 1."

This will be more convenient for the players because they do not have to return to Thailand to get the visas.

Starting this year, the Evian Championship is the fifth major in women's golf.

Pornanong hopes to do well in France to remain in the top 30 on the LPGA Tour money list by the end of the year while rookies Moriya and Thidapa have set their sights on top-60 finishes.

Moriya is currently ranked 40th and Thidapa 68th.
