ThaiPGA still needs sponsor

ThaiPGA still needs sponsor

The ThaiPGA has been given more time to find sponsors for the King's Cup, Asian Tour chairman Kyi Hla Han said yesterday.

With the ThaiPGA struggling to attract sponsors for the US$1 million tournament, which is scheduled to take place from Dec 19-22, Han said the Asian Tour can wait until mid-September.

"I hope it will be sorted out in two or three weeks," he said after meeting with ThaiPGA representatives.

"We try to meet every two weeks to communicate more often. Hopefully, it will be done next month. However, we are quite open to other promoters who want to come up."

Han said his priority was for the tournament to be run smoothly, in accordance with tour standards.

A month ago, ThaiPGA president Chaiphat Sunayont told the Bangkok Post he had signed a contract with Thai Country Club to host the event. But last week, it was announced the tournament would be moved to Black Mountain or Banyan Golf Club with former deputy prime minister Suwat Liptapanlop approached to be tournament advisor.

Sakol Wannapong, deputy governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand, said that, with almost three months to go, there was still enough time for the association to get sponsors.
