Thailand set sights on three gold medals

The Thai squad led by Poom Saksansin and Supamas Saengchan has been tipped to win three out of four gold medals at the SEA Games in Myanmar in December.

Thailand have named seven golfers to take part in the biennial event after a series of qualifying tournaments. The men's team is spearheaded by Poom, alongside Natipong Srithong, Danthai Boonma and Nattawat Suvajanakorn.

Natipong was fortunate to be picked after getting injured in a road accident a few months ago, while Danthai, 17, is one of Thailand's fastest rising players, winning a bronze at last month's Asian Youth Games.

On the women's side, Supamas, who won the individual title at the Queen's Sirikit Cup in April, will lead the Thai challenge alongside Benyapa Niphatsophon and Ornnicha Konsunthea. Thailand coach Boonyarit Uasilpasart said he was satisfied with the line-up and singled out Danthai as the most consistent player in the past few months.

"With the players, we can win at least three gold medals," he said. "It may be tough for our players to win the men's individual title because there are many good players in the tournament with some of them based in the US."

Rangsrid Luxitanond, president of the Thailand Golf Association, said it was a pity that he could not bring US-based players to join the team.

"They can't join the SEA Games team because they will have to take examinations at their schools during that time," he said.
