Runners at this year's Bangkok Marathon are encouraged to ''run for a reason''.

This will be the 26th consecutive year of Thailand's biggest marathon and an estimated 50,000 people from around the world are expected to compete in the event on Nov 17.

The race will begin on Sanamchai Road, opposite the Temple of the Emerald Buddha.

Runners will be competing for His Majesty the King's trophies and cash.

Standard Chartered Bank, the main sponsor of the event, announced yesterday that it had teamed up with UnAids to run a campaign supporting HIV awareness and prevention.

The campaign, titled 'Run for a Reason', will run alongside UnAids' current campaign to 'Get to Zero HIV' _ an ambitious four-year plan to get Aids-related deaths to zero by 2015.

Standard Chartered executive Lyn Kok said the marathon would be used to promote these campaigns.

Anyone interested in registering can do so at the Royal Thai Army Club. Application fees start from 200 baht.
