Menendez confident of Buriram progress

New Buriram United coach Alejandro Menendez believes his team can overturn a 1-0 deficit against Iranian champions Esteghlal and qualify for the semi-finals of the AFC Champions League.

The second leg of their quarter-final will be played at I-Mobile Stadium at 6pm today.

Esteghlal won 1-0 in Teheran last month but Menendez yesterday said he was confident his side could hit back.

"We can win this match," said the Spanish coach, who began his Buriram reign with a 2-0 home win against BEC Tero in the Thai Premier League on Saturday.

"Our team is ready for the match although we are one goal down. We have to play with patience and it is challenging to score two goals against Esteghlal. We have to play an attacking game and also defend well. We have to be confident we can do it."

Buriram will be buoyed by the return of left-back Theeratorn Bunmathan, who has completed a suspension.

"It is good news to have Theeratorn back," Menendez said. "He is one of our main players."

Buriram captain Suchao Nutnum said a strong start is important for his team.

"It is important for us to score the first goal early," he said.

"We will be playing at home with a lot of support from our fans to pressure the opponent. I believe that we can make it to the semi-finals."

Esteghlal coach Amir Ghalenoei was annoyed that Buriram staff taped his team during training.

"I am very disappointed that the host team sent their coaching staff to spy on our team while training," he said.

"When we went to watch Buriram play on Saturday, we had to pay for the tickets. This was not fair."

Ghalenoei said he was confident that his team would progress.

"We were well-prepared for the match and we are confident that we will win," he said. "Although Buriram United have changed their coach, the result will not change."
