Thailand chosen as hosts

Thailand will host the 2014 Asian Youth Amateur Boxing Championships and the 2015 Asian Men's Amateur Boxing Championships.

Both tournaments were officially confirmed yesterday by Aziz Kozhambetov, executive director of the Asian Boxing Confederation and Pichai Junhavachira, president of the Thailand Boxing Association.

"We chose Thailand because of their great commitment and interest in hosting these two tournaments," Kozhambetov said.

"I have inspected the venue, the hotels and also the transportation. I am very happy with them," he said.

Although there were two other offers from countries in East Asia and West Asia, Kozhambetov said that he felt happy with the commitment of Thailand's boxing association.

Moreover, everything met governing body Aiba's standards, he said.

He insisted that giving Thailand the right to host the tournaments was not a consolation after the country failed in their bid to host the 2015 world championships.

Both tournaments will be held at Indoor Stadium, Hua Mark.

The youth tournament will be staged Jan 13-22 next year while the date for the 2015 Asian championships has yet to be fixed.

Kozhambetov said that more than 150 boxers from 25 countries are expected to compete at the youth event because many countries are working hard to cultivate their young fighters so they can compete for medals at the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.
