Worawi defends election

Worawi Makudi on Monday insisted that last week's election for the presidency of the Football Association of Thailand (FAT) was conducted in a straightforward manner.

FAT president Worawi Makudi.

Worawi on Thursday beat former national team manager Virach Charnpanich 42-28 for a fourth straight term as Thai football chief.

But Virach, who also lost to Worawi in the previous election two years ago, complained of irregularities and his supporters have vowed to take legal action.

On Friday, the ad hoc election commission announced that it would not approve the result.

The final decision whether to approve Worawi's win rests with the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT). But Worawi told yesterday's press conference that the election was clean and fair.

"The election was transparent and conducted according to Fifa's new charter," said Worawi, a Fifa executive.

Worawi agrued that the election commission's job ended after it announced the result.

"They were not authorised to approve the result," he said.

Under an agreement, Virach picked three of the five members of the election commission and Worawi two, and Worawi named two of the three members of the appeals committee and Virach one.

The trio on the election commission, who were selected by Virach including Chanin Kaenhiran, rejected the result while the other two, who were named by Worawi, did not.

Earlier, the appeals committee reversed a decision by the commission, a move which Virach and his backers claimed was in favour of Worawi.

Worawi said he wondered why Chanin did not protest right after the election and instead announced his and the other two commission members' decision the following day.

Virach and his supporters have claimed some of the 72 voters, who backed Worawi, had nothing to do with the clubs they represented at the election.

Worawi argued that some of the voters who supported Virach also did not have a role in the clubs they represented including Chada Thaiseth who voted as representative of Paknampho while he actually is chairman of Uthai Thani.

He said officials from the SAT, Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and Fifa were at the election venue as observers.
