Phachara set for pro debut

Teenage sensation Phachara Khongwatmai will turn professional today at the Singha Classic in Nakhon Nayok.

The grade 9 student became the world's youngest player ever to win a professional golf tournament in July when he won the Hua Hin Open at the age of 14 years, two months and 18 days.

Phachara has decided to join the paid ranks sooner rather than later.

''Actually, he planned to turn pro next May,'' said his mother Pannee.

''With the win in Hua Hin, he can play on the Singha All Thailand Tour for two years, so he has decided to turn professional.

''We believe he is not too young to turn pro.

''We see it as a great opportunity for him to grab.''

Pannee said his family would not push Phachara too hard and that the youngster would have more chances to play alongside some of the country's best players.

The Songkla player also plans to join the Asian Tour qualifying school in Thailand in January.

The two-million-baht Singha Classic will begin today at Royal Hill Golf Resort and Spa.
