Buriram win to complete second treble

Thunder Castle recover after Ratchaburi take early lead to claim third consecutive League Cup

Buriram United yesterday completed their second treble after beating Ratchaburi 2-1 in the Toyota League Cup final.

Buriram United celebrate winning the League Cup after beating Ratchaburi 2-1 in the final.

In a rematch of last year's final, won 4-1 by Buriram, Ratchaburi got off to a good start when Brazilian striker Douglas Gardozo opened the scoring after just nine minutes before the Thunder Castle fought back with goals from Osmar Ibanez (47) and substitute Adisak Kraisorn (64). Both sides were eventually reduced to 10 men with Douglas and Adisak sent off.

Having won the Thai Premier League and the FA Cup, Buriram emulated their 2011 success when they became the first _ and still the only _ team to sweep all three major domestic titles in the same season.

Last night's triumph was their third straight League Cup title. They are also the three-time defending FA Cup champions after defeating Bangkok Glass in the final earlier this month.

Buriram received five million baht in prize money while Ratchaburi earned one million baht.

Buriram midfielder Jirawat Makkrarom was named man of the match and received a Toyota Camry Hybrid worth 1.87 million baht while Chonburi won the fair play award and got a Toyota Vigo Champ pick-up truck worth 864,000 baht.

As for Buriram, they have become the dominant force in Thailand with eight major domestic titles in their four-year history.

Newin Chidchob took over the Provincial Electricity Authority football club in 2010 and Buriram have since won two TPL, three FA Cup and three League Cup titles.

In a lively match at Thammasat Stadium, Prayad Boonya's free-kick found Douglas, who headed the ball into the net after nine minutes.

Four minutes later, Prayad almost got a second goal for Ratchaburi when his free-kick deflected off Anawin Jujeen and came close to going into his own net.

Buriram soon found their rhythm and began piling the pressure on the Dragons.

Japanese forward Kai Hirano's header hit the bar and Suchao Nutnum's shot went just wide.

However, Ratchaburi came close to doubling their lead when John Obregon saw his shot sail over the bar from close range.

Two minutes into the second half, Douglas was sent off and conceded a penalty after tripping Manuel Redondo in the area and Ibanez made no mistake from the spot.

Second-half substitute Adisak became Buriram's hero with his winner after 64 minutes. However, he was sent off in injury time after receiving his second yellow card.
