Worawi hopeful of soccer gold sweep

Coach Kiatisak defends his team selections

Thai football chief Worawi Makudi is targeting a sweep of four gold medals in football and futsal at next month's SEA Games in Myanmar.

Thai players react after being eliminated in the first round at the 2011 SEA Games.

"I am not worried about our men's and women's futsal teams because they are the top Asean sides," Worawi yesterday told a press conference.

While he admitted that the men's and women's football teams could face tough assignments, he was confident that they both would become champions.

"I am worried about our men's and women's football teams," he said. "Our men were eliminated in the first round in the previous two SEA Games.

"Our fans have lost their faith in the team and we have to win back their faith. Our women must not underestimate Vietnam."

"But I am confident that they both will win gold medals," he added.

Worawi, who is also chairman of the Asian Football Confederation's referees committee, said the officiating in football at the 27th SEA Games should be fair as most match officials will come from neutral countries, such as China, South Korea, Taiwan and Maldives.

Kiatisak Senamuang, coach of the men's football team, said he had selected his 20 player on merit after he was accused of nepotism.

"Many people may not agree with my selection but I picked the best players," he said.

Kiatisak, who won several SEA Games gold medals during his playing career, said he had plenty of information about other teams.

Thailand will open their campaign against Timor Leste on Dec 7 with the other teams in Group B being the hosts, Indonesia and Cambodia.

"Timor have six or seven Brazilian-born players," he said.

He said he had told his players to do their best and not to put extra pressure on themselves.

"The SEA Games is not an easy tournament for us to win," Kiatisak said. "But it is not too difficult for us to win."

Defending champions Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, Laos, the Philippines and Brunei are in Group A with the top two teams of each group advance to the semi-finals.
