Bothroyd seals Kirins move

Former England striker Jay Bothroyd has signed a two-year contract with Thai Premier League side Muang Thong United.

Jay Bothroyd has signed a two-year contract with Muang Thong United.

The 31-year-old former Queens Park Rangers and Arsenal forward played for Muang Thong in a friendly match at the weekend and was unveiled at the club's SCG Stadium yesterday.

The deal is reportedly worth 5 million (about 270 million baht).

The Kirins are rebuilding a new team after they finished empty-handed last season while their bitter rivals Buriram United swept all major domestic titles.

They recently appointed Englishman Scott Cooper as their new coach.

"It's an unbelievably exciting opportunity," said Bothroyd.

"First and foremost I want to repay the faith paid in me by playing well for the club and fans. Muang Thong United are the biggest club in Thailand and have the potential to be one of the most successful in Asia.

"Along with the playing side, I will be working with the club to promote the team and league on a global basis.

"This is a fantastic challenge and I am looking forward to life in Thailand with my family. I am very grateful to be here."

Muang Thong executive director Ronnarit Suewaja said: "We wanted Jay because he is not only a fantastic footballer but also will be a great ambassador for our club and the Thai Premier League.

"Muang Thong United have a tradition of competing for the major honours in Thailand and we also want to perform well in the Asian Champions League."

Apart from Bothroyd, Muang Thong have signed forward Milan Bubalo of Serbia and three Thai players but Ronnarit said the club would not stop there.

"We will try to get more players particularly defenders," he said.
