Thailand determined to find silver lining

Thailand will be trying to salvage some pride tonight when they take on Lebanon in their last qualifier for the 2015 Asian Cup.

The Group B match at Rajamangala National Stadium kicks off at 9pm.

Thailand have been eliminated without having earned a single point in their previous five games, while Lebanon need a win and hope the other results go their way to qualify for the 2015 finals as the best third-placed team among all groups.

Thailand will also regain the No.1 status in Southeast Asia with a win.

Thailand coach Kiatisak Senamuang could not attend yesterday's press conference due to illness with his assistant Klairung Treejaksang representing the Thai team.

"Although it is a meaningless match for us, we won't let Lebanon win easily," he said.

"We will do our best and every player is looking forward to the match."

Thailand, who lost 5-2 in Beirut earlier in the campaign, are expected to start with two strikers, Teerasil Dangda and Teerathep Winothai.

Lebanon coach Giuseppe Giannini said his team would go on the attack to try to secure a win.

"It is important for us to win the match. This will be a difficult match but we have studied tapes of Thailand's matches," the former Italy international said. "I am sure that we will win."

Meanwhile, China will hope to put an unconvincing qualifying campaign behind them and reach their 11th straight Asian Cup playing under new manager Alain Perrin when they face former champions Iraq today.

China sit second behind Group C winners Saudi Arabia while Iraq, who lifted the trophy in 2007, are two points further back, meaning they need to win in Sharjah to guarantee progression.

However, China can lose the game and still be confident of qualifying as the best third-placed team, with closest challengers Lebanon needing to beat Thailand by at least six goals to overtake China.

Only two spots are up for grabs today, with 13 teams, including hosts Australia and defending champions Japan, already confirmed and one place reserved for the winners of the AFC Challenge Cup in May.

According to state news agency Xinhua, caretaker boss Fu Bo will take charge of China for the last time with Perrin expected to be watching from the stands.

Malaysia and Hong Kong, who like Syria are on four points to Lebanon's five and Iraq's six, will also be praying for a miracle when they take on Yemen and Vietnam away.
