In the women’s 58kg division, Sukanya lifted 99kg in snatch for gold, and also was best in total weight (218kg) after managing 119kg in clean and jerk.

Un Sim Rim of North Korea took silver (97kg) and Yenny Fernanda of Colombia bronze (94kg) in snatch.

In total weight, Fernanda was second with 213kg while the North Korean was third with 212kg.

"I did not think that I would win here,’’ said Sukanya, who will target a medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

“Of course, I was the best performance of my career.’’

Sukanya failed to win gold in clean and jerk because of her body weight.

She and Fernanda both lifted 119kg but the Colombian received the top honour because her bodyweight was less.

In all, Thailand, who had seven athletes in the tournament, won two gold and six silver medals.

There were 269 athletes from 49 countries in the event.

Busaba Yodbangtoey, president of the Thai Amateur Weightlifting Association, said some of the athletes could represent Thailand at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
