International Golf Federation (IGF) officials on Monday confirmed the qualification system for the golf competition in Rio.

There will be 60 players in both the women’s and men’s events. The world's top 15 players in the women’s and men’s divisions as of July 11, 2016 will be immediately eligible. The rest of the field will also be based on the rankings, but with no more than four players from any one country able to play.

The competition will take the format of a 72-hole strokeplay tournament.

World No.34 Thongchai said it will be a great honour to play at the Olympics but added he was not sure if he will still be competitive in two years' time.

"By 2016 I will be 47," the six-time European Tour winner said. "But it would be a great honour for any Thai golfer to represent the country at such a big tournament."

Also looking forward to the Rio Games is 24-year-old Kiradech, who won the Asian Tour's Order of Merit last year, four years after turning pro.

"I am gaining more experience and am quite confident my world ranking will be high enough to earn me a berth at the Olympic Games," Kiradech said.

Thailand seems to have an even better chance of seeing their female representatives in Rio. There are now five Thais playing regularly on the LPGA Tour, led by world No.27 Pornanong Phatlum and No.43 Ariya Jutanugarn.
