Thongchai hits career high in rankings

Thai star Thongchai Jaidee moved up to his career-best 33rd spot in the world after sharing 39th place at the British Open on Sunday.

In his eighth appearance at the third major of the year, Thongchai shot a one-under-par 71 at Royal Liverpool — his only sub-par round of the week following three consecutive even-par 72s.

He earned €26,625 as his season earnings on the European Tour increased to €1,088,822. He is ranked 11th on the Race to Dubai.

Thongchai is taking a one-week break before playing at next week's WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in the US.

He is eligible for the event after winning the Nordea Masters in Sweden for his sixth European Tour crown last month.

Thongchai left Bangkok on May 3 for his European summer sojourn and enjoyed a good spell with one win and two other top-five finishes.

However, the 44-year-old admitted he may have to play less.

“I’m feeling a bit tired as I’ve played a lot of golf. I’ll stay in London for a week and then head over to the WGC and the PGA Championship before going home for a break,” he said.

“I need to be off for a week before I play again. I’ll probably not touch my clubs for four days. It’s important to to keep fresh and keep the body strong.”

Thongchai said he would consider scaling down his international travels to ensure he is always in tip-top condition for the big events.

“The scheduling is very important. I’m trying to cut it down a bit, trying to ensure I play the big tournaments on the Asian Tour as well and being out here," Thongchai said.

"You have to plan well especially in the end of the year when there are big events. You have to cut down some events eventually."

Meanwhile, Kiradech Aphibarnrat, the other Thai competing at last week's British Open, dropped to 111th in the world from 106th after missing the cut at Royal Liverpool.

Falling out of the top 100 means Kiradech does not qualify for the PGA Championship.
