Pimsiri leads Asiad weightlifting team

Olympic silver medallist Pimsiri Sirikaew will lead the Thai weightlifting team at the 17th Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea.

Officials from the National Olympic Committee of Thailand and Grand Sport Co unveil the country's uniform for next month's Asian Games.

The Thai Amateur Weightlifting Association yesterday named 13 athletes (seven women and six men) for the Sept 19-Oct 4 tournament.

Pimsiri, 22, took silver in the 58kg division at the 2012 London Games but will compete in the 63kg class at the Incheon tournament.

The other women are Panida Khamsri (48kg) Sopita Tanasan ( 53kg), Kittima Sutanan (53kg), Rattkan Gulnoi (58kg), Pimsiri Sirikaew (63kg), Chitcanok Pulsabsakul (75kg) and Praeonapa Khenjantuek (75kg).

The six men are Thawatchai Phonchiangsa (62kg), Tairat Bunsuk (69kg), Chatuphum Chinnawong (77kg), Pornchai Lobsi (77kg), Pitaya Tibnoke (94kg) and Sarat Sumpradit (94kg).

Tawa president Busaba Yodbangtoey said that the athletes had trained for a long time and taken part in many international events.

As a result, she is confident that the lifters, particularly the women, will have good results.

But she declined to predict how many gold medals the team will win and said Thailand's main rivals are China, Kazakhstan, North Korea and Taiwan.

At the previous Games in 2010, Thailand won one silver (Pensiri Laosirikul ) and one bronze (Prapawadee Jaroenrattanatarakoon).

Meanwhile, Thailand are satisfied with their athletes' performance at the 2014 Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China which ended yesterday.

With 55 athletes in 13 sports, Thailand took home three gold, two silver and three bronze medals.

Thailand's delegation chief Thana Chaiprasit said although Thailand won only three golds, one fewer than the number they won at the inaugural tournament in 2010, the athletes' overall performance was better than the previous edition.

"We did quite well in tennis, yachting, windsurfing, swimming and athletics," he said.

Thailand won three gold medals in weightlifting (Duangaksorn Chaidee and Rattanaphon Pakkaratha) and taekwondo (Panipak Wongpatanakit).

Swimmer Sarisa Suwannachet and weightlifter Sakda Boonmee got silver medals, while golfers Danthai Boonma and Supamas Sangchan and badminton player Busanan Ongbamrungphan claimed bronzes.

The third Youth Olympics will be held in Buenos Aires in 2018.
