Piyanut back for Japan showdown

The Thai women’s volleyball team has been boosted by the return of Piyanut Pannoy in Thursday’s bronze medal match against Japan.

They will be trying to win the country’s first ever Asian Games medal in indoor volleyball.

Thailand lost to China in the semi-finals with Payanut sidelined due to a back injury.

"She is recovering well and after talks with our medical staff we have decided to use her against Japan," said Thailand coach Nattapol Srisamutnak.

“With her presence, our defence will become better and we can stick to our plan. Her return definitely gives us a big boost."

But if she fails a late fitness test, Kattaly Pinsuwan will play.

As for Taddao Nuekjang, who is nursing a slight knee injury, she will be replaced by Malika Kantong if she is not available.

Thailand beat Japan in the preliminary round in Incheon but Nattapol said the result was irrelevant.

"Japan have a lot of good players," he said. "They are good in defence but we are better in attack. It will be an interesting match and we are ready for the challenge."

Meanwhile, Kim Dar-Ae scored the winner as South Korea ended China’s 12-year reign as the Asian Games women’s hockey champions with a 1-0 win in the final.

Kim’s decisive goal in the 41st minute handed the Koreans the title they won four times in a row from 1986 to 1998 before China emerged victorious in the last three editions.

India defeated Japan 2-1 to take bronze.
