Sakol Wannapong, deputy governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand, said his organisation supports the event because it helps promote the country's traditional martial art which has become more and more popular worldwide.

"The first edition was a success. We have seen more women around the world particularly in Europe, America and Australia take up Muay Thai,'' Sakol said.

"Some of these foreigners are good enough to fight Thais. I believe the sport will continue enjoying an increase in popularity.''

Withaya Inala, president of organiser World Angel Fight Co, said the event gives women opportunities to show the world their fighting skills.

The event features 32 fighters in the 57kg division. The first bouts will be held in January and the final in March.

The total purse is two million baht with the champion taking home one million baht plus a Toyota pick-up truck worth 800,000 baht.

Thailand's Chommanee Sor Tehiran is the title holder. She beat Italy's Miriam Sabot in an exhibition bout yesterday.
