BUENOS AIRES: Thai sailor Voravong Rachrattanaruk won silver in the individual event at the 2014 Optimist World Championship in dramatic fashion this week.

Ahead of the final day, the youngster was sixth and a top-three finish looked out of reach.

Thailand coach Somkiat Poonpat said before racing started on the final day that he needed to be in the top three in three races to have a chance of achieving third place overall.

With racing delayed due to lack of winds, there would be only one race.

At halfway, Voravong was second but then fell to fourth but that was good enough to lift him to second overall.

Suthon Yampinid finished fifth in the final race for ninth overall and Nopporn Booncherd moved into 26th overall among 270 boats.

Thailand earlier won the team event and will arrive home tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the sailing season will kick off at Cape Panwa in Phuket this weekend when a fleet of over 20 boats race in the Phuket Dinghy Series 2014.

The series are under the umbrella of the King's Cup Regatta and is sponsored by PTT Global Chemical which sees the potential of young Thai sailors.

The race will start today at Cape Panwa and end tomorrow.

The next and final series will be held at Phuket's Kata beach from Nov 29-30.
