Le Mans race record-holder Kristensen retires

COPENHAGEN - Danish driver Tom Kristensen, who has won the Le Mans 24 Hours race a record nine times, is retiring at the age of 47, he announced on Wednesday.

Tom Kristensen, pictured on the podium after taking second place in the 2014 Le Mans race, says he is retiring at the age of 47

"I have reached the finish line. I have grown up. I have been told that you know when it's time to stop. I have not had that feeling until now," the Audi driver told a press conference in Copenhagen.

He will race once more, in the final Endurance race of the season in Brazil on November 30.

"I have chosen to announce my retirement now in order to be able to say a proper goodbye to the sport I love so much at our last race in Sao Paolo in Brazil," he explained.

Kristensen won Le Mans nine times in 18 attempts and was world endurance champion in 2013. He has driven for Audi since 2000 and will stay on at the German manufacturers in an ambassadorial role.
