Winds elude Phuket fleet

phuket: With the elusive wind remaining that way, there was little action on the third day of the Phuket King's Cup Regatta yesterday.

Boats struggle in calm conditions yesterday.

But there is a great ray of adventure and hope for the future of sailing in Thailand.

Thai female sailor Sinsupa 'Mink' Wannasuth is skippering a yacht in her first regatta with an all-female crew. Four Thais, led by Sinsupa, and one Dutch lady is racing a Platu one-design yacht.

Sinsupa is in a confident mood in her first ever regatta and delighted to be competing in an event, known as a tribute to His Majesty the King who will celebrate his birthday tomorrow.

Sinsupa is grateful to His Majesty's support for sailing. "Young people should join sailing," she said.

The King won a gold medal in sailing at the Southeast Asian Peninsular (SEAP) Games (now the SEA Games) in 1967.

Inaugurated in 1987 to celebrate the 60th birthday of His Majesty, the King's Cup Regatta, under royal patronage, has been held every year since.
