MONACO - The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)'s decision to appoint a three-person independent commission to investigate serious doping allegations made against Russia in a German television documentary was on Tuesday welcomed by world athletics governing body IAAF.
WADA has acted following a series of German television documentaries which said Russian athletes were systematically given banned substances at international competitions
"The IAAF takes this opportunity to reiterate its full support of the WADA investigation," said IAAF President Lamine Diack.
"Our primary concern must always be to protect the integrity of competition in support of the vast majority of clean athletes, and we look forward to working with WADA to this end."
The 60-minute documentary "Secret Doping Dossier: How Russia produces its Winners" was aired by state broadcaster ARD earlier this month and pointed the finger at Russian Athletics Federation president and IAAF treasurer Valentin Balakhnichev among others.
The documentary featured hard-hitting accusations by 800m runner Yulia Stepanova, who is banned until January for a doping violation, and her husband Vitaly Stepanov, who worked for RUSADA between 2008 and 2011.
